Red Cross Water Safety Week urged after drowning toll
June 1 to 8 1969 marks Red Cross Water Safety Week with strong warnings from the Canadian Red Cross Society about drowning deaths. Last year 1186 Canadians died from drowning including 51 in this province. Lack of supervision caused 212 child deaths and 159 were under six. Boating deaths reached 361 and many could have survived with life jackets. Although the law requires life jackets for passengers, it does not compel wearing them. The message urges families to buy and wear water safety precautions to prevent future tragedies.
