Canada Faces Dilemma Over Kennedy Trade Tariff Cuts
Mitchell Sharp, Canada's new Trade Minister, questions United States plans for across the board tariff cuts under the Kennedy Trade Expansion Act. The policy aims for a 50 percent cut over five years with minimal exceptions, challenging Canada's traditional tariff protections and emphasis on secondary industry while seeking reciprocal gains among GATT members. If 40 countries share a fair formula, the Herter proposals could succeed.
