Militia Graduates From Special Training At Minto Armories
About 250 Militia soldiers from Manitoba Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario completed a two month basic military training course at Minto Armories marching in parade. Col W Clement Dick praised their progress and noted how this training would aid civilian life and youth leadership. Awards were given to D G Ryan Tompkins Sask best in A Company H W Smithson Eden Man best in B Company and A W Laakso Whitewood Sask best shot. Laakso received the award via his platoon sergeant who accepted it as Laakso had joined regular forces. The intake was the largest single day recruitment since the war attracting a large rural contingent and around 300 started the training.

The 1955 road plan, with estimated cost 518,949,600, was announced by Minister F. C. Beil. Federal share 52,874.0 goes to the Trans-Canada work. municipalities and districts will provide 1,397,675 for 50-50 projects. Major upgrades cover Highways 59 22 11 15 and the Trans-Canada corridor from Norwood to the East.

Boys' Club Formed At Tyndall

Mrs. Jordie Thomas celebrated a 108th birthday on March 15 and remains active with friends from Victoria Beach Albert Beach and Grand Marais plus her daughter Nancy of Fort Alexander. Mrs. Robert Thomas passed March 17 at Stony Point. interment at Balsam Bay Cemetery. The obituary notes a large family including four sons and three daughters and twenty six grandchildren. A hockey game featured Victoria Beach Grand Marais players losing to Beausejour. Mr. and Mrs. R. Monkman hosted dinner for twenty on March 6 for Mrs. John Anderson’s birthday. Former Seven Sisters Man Rescued from Navy Island
A light seen from the mainland led to the rescue of two duck hunters marooned on Navy Island in the Niagara River last fall. The return trip took about two and a half hours as Constable Lloyd Brant and Conservation Supervisor Roy Muma, aided by William Gillies and Jack MacFee, retrieved the hunters and their gear after a motor failure stranded them.
