Beausejour Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rumak, pioneer residents of Broken Head district and Beausejour, marked their 50th anniversary on February 20 at the Ukrainian hall. Surrounded by family friends and relatives, they received tokens and good wishes from Rev. Father S. Borys. They wed February 3 1904 at St Peter and St Pauls Catholic church Ladywood. the family includes six sons two daughters and nine grandchildren.

Pine Falls Man to Compete in British Empire Rifle Meet
Don O. White of Pine Falls has qualified to compete in the British Empire Rifle Meet near Aldershot England this summer. He and 18 Canadians sail from Quebec on the Cunardess Scythia June 9. White, from New Brunswick, has taken part in this trip before in 1931 and 1933. He is a Dominion of Canada Rifle Association member and Winnipeg Light Infantry. works as Control Superintendent at Pine Falls Paper Mill.

Beausejour Queen Crowned At Winter Karnival Night
Miss Lillian Beley sponsored by Beausejour Collegiate was named Karnival Queen at Beausejour Winter Karnival held March 5 and 6. Crowds from local and surrounding districts attended both nights featuring costumes ice skating and novelty acts. The Winnipeg Rangers beat Beausejour All Stars 2 to 0. Queen Lillian Beley was crowned by Phylis Mroz with Eric Abbott directing the ice extravaganza and Frank Stack Gordon Audley presenting speed skating and barrel jumping. Local figure skating talent debuted Saturday night to acclaim for future prospects.

Edward Kirby of Whitemouth was honored at his son William Kirby’s home on Feb 28 for his 80th birthday. Attendees included sons Fred and Les Lié of Kenora Ontario, daughter-in-law Mrs Richard Jorgenson, and friends from Winnipeg. Kirby, in good health, farmed extensively until his wife’s passing and has attended White mouth Anglican Church for fifty years. A group presentation was given by attendees.

The Pine Falls Quarter Century Club hosted a safety program at the Recreation Hall. Guest speaker George Walmsley, Car District Supervisor of Safety for Canadian Pacific Railway, urged home and workplace safety, noted high industrial and non industrial fatalities, and emphasized railway crossing safety. A display of safety shoes and films complemented the talk. Mill Manager and the era history notes were also mentioned.

Scout Cub Exhibition Open Night in Community Hall
The Seven Sisters Scout and Cub group held Open Nite on Friday March 5 in the community hall. Ewart Carruthers and George Kretchmer led both groups through signaling compass reading rope tying and group games. Romeo Pickard opened the evening welcomed parents and praised support. Richie Gittins received a safety badge from Scout Master Kretschmer. Ladies of the social committee served lunch as the event closed.

Libau Manitoba hosts its first annual bonspiel at the two sheet curling club over three days from Feb 26. Twenty two rinks from Transcona Beausejour Clandeboye Winnipeg Lac du Bonnet Scanterbury Selkirk and Libau competed. Topolinski of Transcona won the first event and Joe Sparman of Lac du Bonnet won the second.

Brokenhead Municipal Hall to Beausejour
The Rural Municipality of Brokenhead plans a new Municipal Hall and admin headquarters in Beausejour this year. It will rent the former Beausejour Royal Bank on Park Avenue from April 15 to August 31, by which the new building is expected to be ready. The council approved final payment on the Grand Beach Highway construction, opening the way for provincial takeover. The 1954 general levy was set at 53 mills and a 1954 budget prepared accordingly. Reeve A A Trapp was named Drainage Trustee for 1954.

Birds Hill Flyers clinched the Sellen Trophy by sweeping the North Springfield Sparks in three straight playoff games in a 3 2 victory. Gerry Keecian assisted by Geo Kelly netted the winning goal late in the final period as Birds Hill sealed the series before a large local crowd. J Morrisey and S Ostrosky scored for the Sparks.
