Anoxia and ventilation fix for chick losses in hatcheries

A rural poultry science column explains how anoxia, caused by CO2 buildup, damages embryos and chicks. It stresses continuous fresh air intake, proper exhaust, and specific air change rates per 1000 eggs to prevent oxygen deprivation, citing a 225000-capacity hatchery as a case where adding an intake solved the problem.

Properly Ventilated Hatchery Ventilation System Drawn

A 390000 egg hatchery uses a 70 by 50 by 11 ft room heated by a steam space heater with an 18 inch continuously running fan. Air is circulated at 3000 cu ft per minute with a branch duct adding 580 cu ft per minute of fresh air. The room air is replaced hourly and passes through the heater fan four times per hour. Exhaust goes outside keeping oxygen high and CO2 under 0.6 percent, yielding excellent chick quality.

Homemade snowplow by Arcola craftsman costs six hundred dollars

Pictured above is a homemade snowplow built by Bob Smiley of Arcola last winter. The device uses a spindle and hub for fan rotation with single race SET bearings, PTO drive, steel chain and sprockets, and mostly new material. Estimated cost is $600, with potential for lower price if a machine shop handles sprockets and hubs. Material can be collected in summer at little to no cost.
