Losses from Weeds Hit Manitoba Farms in 1956 Study

A Plant Science survey near Winnipeg tested 50 fields to quantify weed damage and yields. Across unsprayed and sprayed plots, weed counts ranged from 25 to 2221 per yard, with yield losses from 0.6 to 47.2 percent. Wheat, barley, oats, and flax showed varying reductions, with MCP spraying reducing losses but not eliminating them. The study calculated Manitobawide losses at about 32 million bushels worth roughly 39.7 million dollars.

Debating the Press Function and Road Safety Reflections

An observer defends a newspaper role of reporting, editing, and holding power to account while satirically noting Punch magazine editor Muggeridge’s critique. The piece then argues for a practical view of journalism. It shifts to road safety, blaming drivers rather than machines, and ends praising post office workers for mail handling despite rising costs and messy handwriting.

Feeder versus slaughter heifers pricing margin analysis

A. W. Wood of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management notes that Winnipeg prices show heifers priced 4 to 6 dollars above feeder steers per hundredweight, while slaughter values lag by 1 to 1.50 dollars under good steers. From January to April 1957 the margin favored heifers by 2.50 to 5 dollars, making feeding heifers potentially more profitable with careful buy and sell timing.
