Nitrogen on combine stubble boosts feed protein and yield
Alberta researchers show nitrogen fertilizer at 20 40 or 60 lb per acre raises barley grain yields 27 36 and 45 percent and increases protein by 1 3 percentage points. Feeding tests with rats and swine confirm higher protein grains improve feed efficiency, suggesting two possible benefits from stubble fertilization. Recommendations on fertilizer types and rates appear in Publication No 5 Fertilizers in Alberta from the Alberta Agriculture Extension Service.
