Banks seek freer lending powers from Porter Commission

Canada’s eight chartered banks pressed the Porter Royal Commission on Banking and Finance to loosen controls and expand lending, arguing current limits curb competition with near banks and hinder monetary policy. They warned of declining deposits share and a narrowed Bank of Canada remit if restrictions stay. Governor Rasminsky disputed bank disadvantages, while commissioners weighed risks of bank consolidation and increased competition among a tightly controlled system. The issue faces Parliament after the commission report.

Nuclear fears ease world end threat and arts uplift in Winnipeg

The piece notes Khrushchev saying communism cannot win a thermonuclear war, aligning with Kennedy’s warning that such a war means the end for all. It contrasts global dread with a Winnipeg radio moment praising a hymn and a Manitoba industrial show display, urging imagination and enterprise. It ends musing that discovery, like oil, comes from persistent search across fields.

Manitoba cattle brands modernized for better record keeping

Beef producers in Manitoba are urged to market bred cows and heifers rather than mature stock as demand grows for quality breeding cattle. A new card filing system will replace the old Brand Book, improving processing of brand applications and renewals. Unrecorded brands are illegal and offer little value for identification, so owners should apply now for branding and registration through local agricultural reps or the Livestock Branch in Winnipeg.
