Farmers Embrace Loafing Barn Concept Despite Caution
Aron Kroeker promotes a loafing barn with self feeding hay racks and silage systems saving time. He milks 10 cows currently, plans for 20, uses three daily milkings, and cites cost around 3500 dollars with 40 cow pens. Experts say cows stay healthier in this setup.
The New Look Loafing Barn In Manitoba Dairying
Three southeastern Manitoba farms have adopted the loafing barn dairy method this year. J L Lord of La Broquerie built the first loafing barn, now adding a milking parlor. Rene Prefontaine of St Pierre, provincial efficiency record holder, built one after studying in the northern States and believes it can save time. Aron Kroeker near Steinbach also built a loafing barn, claiming it cuts operating time in half. The system centers on cows going to feed in a three sided, draft-tight loafing barn with an adjoining milking parlor, and a raised stall for milking, plus an above ground silo and self-feeding hayracks for minimal attention.
