The Powerview council opened its 1936 term with Mayor H. J. Parent leading the session on January 3, as councilors Arthur Bruce and Stanley Laz joined the proceedings. The meeting outlined public works initiatives for the year.
Community notes recount holiday visits church services and celebrations in Powerview and Pine Falls. Eddy Perkopitz recovering after surgery at General Hospital and doing well. Mrs Fred Soluck recovering after surgery at St Boniface Hospital. Second anniversary of Mr and Mrs Robert Thompson celebrated at D J Thompson home with guests Wim Wittmeier H Wittmeier and W Ruth. Ruth Pasaluko visiting parents S Pasaluko. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs L Wachal on birth of baby girl born Dec 31. grandparents Paul Smorhay.
Erhart Zirk of North Thalberg School and Thalberg 4 H Grain Club receives the Canadian Hall Underwriters Association Award for 4 H Seed Club achievement in 1955. Prize includes a pen and pencil set. Club projects included Display, Demonstration Plot, and Wheat Test Plot. July Field Day drew many local farmers. 1956 officers named Steve Antymis leader John Stokotelny assistant E Zirk president and Donald Kulbaba secretary.
A Christmas season report details multiple social gatherings at homes of Molinski and related families from December 25 to Boxing Day and January 2. Attendees include Basink, Okilita, Bosak, Golembinski, Nikodem, Krawchuk, Roshko, Gmitrovski, Shumils, and others from Winnipeg, Beausejour, Fisher Branch, and surrounding areas.
The Rural Municipality of Brokenhead plans to open a new Municipal Hall later this month in Beausejour at the junction of No 1 East and No 22 Highway. Ed Schirle replaces Anton Strecker on the council, which also names drainage, finance, and deputy reeve roles for the coming year.
Romas, Stanley Holyk and Ann Krawchuk of Winnipeg are noted. A list of visitors during the festive season includes Evelyn Krawchuk, Joyce Molinski, Mar sery Mariash, Wanda Mroz, Ethel Kindefora, Vic, John and Dan Mosquin, Laurence Staska, Virgina Golembioski, Ralph Trombo, Bert Molinski, Alfred Hintz, Dorothy and Olga Hinty, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kozyra and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Tober. Mike Switek spent days in Beausejour Hospital with pneumonia and is hoped to be recovering. Wm. Buss of Medicine Hat Alberta visited Julius Hintz. Visitors at Stanley Trombo’s home on Christmas Eve included Mr. and Mrs. P. Kunderman of Beausejour and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bumgartner of Arborg.
The Brokenhead East School Xmas concert drew a fair crowd despite poor weather. Chairman Ed Bortowsky kept audiences engaged between acts as children performed recitations songs and plays. Santa Claus distributed candy and gifts before lunch for families including Mr and Mrs W Foot and daughter Beverly, who later left for St Paul Minnesota. Mrs Ferens has returned from Beausejour hospital after a mild pneumonia. SFU held a meeting with MFU Convention discussions and prize winners announced. Mrs W Trapp won door prize and Mrs Rose Paseshnik claimed a jackpot with Peter Differ as gentleman’s prize winner. Lunch followed, and readers were wished a happy 1956.
Victoria Beach residents attended the wedding of Neal Turcotte and Marie Mowat in Loan Straits on Friday. Following the ceremony, Marie teaches in Elford, Manitoba, as Neal seeks work there, with many relatives visiting and plans for future visits noted.
Beausejour area news notes a Beausejour Farmers gathering at the Legion Hall on Thursday January 12 at 8 p.m. Mrs Anne Lane Lady directs the MFA zone ten event with talks on convention matters and the recent mass meeting. The column also shares local holiday greetings, visits, and curling updates.
The Seven Sisters community club New Year’s Eve Frolic drew about 200 attendees with thanks to pres. Howard Leith and the committee for a successful event. A new baby born to Bud and Dora Braund of Virden, Mary Lee, is reported healthy. Local resident Art Braund, a civil engineer, returned from northern Canada radar work and shaved his red beard after playing Santa for the crowd.
Beausejour Town Council appointed department heads on Tuesday night. Sid Meltzer was named Deputy Mayor and Electrical Department head. Pete Kuchinski became Street Commissioner. Frank Wojick took Health and Welfare. Pau Duma led Finance. Wojick and Mrs. F Drysdale were re elected to hospital board and Beausejour Health Unit representatives.
The Beausejour Women’s Institute held its January meeting at the Beausejour Hotel. After business, two films on Child Psychology and home accident prevention were shown. A new year project to write Beausejour’s history invites district cooperation. bring clippings pictures or information to Mrs. R. Giesrechs. Pictures will be returned after a reprint.
