Alberta health figures show 2103 mental defectives sterilized under the Sexual Sterilization Act from 1928 to this year. The eugenics board met 15 times in Red Deer Edmonton and Ponoka to review cases. 119 of 121 mental defectives were recommended for surgery. Dr J Donovan Ross said operations occur with parental consent where possible and that no secrecy surrounds the act. The Alberta Catholic Welfare Association urged repeal of nonconsensual sterilization provisions.
