Manitoba to levy succession and gift taxes on estates
Finance Minister Cherniack announced Manitoba will join eight provinces in imposing a succession duty and a gift tax starting January 1, 1972. Exemptions include 150 000 for preferred beneficiaries and 25 000 for collateral beneficiaries with a 1 000 cap for strangers. Gifts under 2 000 yearly are tax free up to 10 000 a year. Estimated impact is small based on 1969 estates data. The move follows Ottawa’s withdrawal from the program.
