Highway Progress in North East Map Shows Road Network

A long report accompanies a map published in The Springfield Leader in 1951 detailing the target highway and all weather road network for North East Manitoba. Initiated by Roxy Hamilton and local chambers, the plan arose from 1950 meetings at Whitemouth Lac du Bermet Pine Falls Powerview and Beausejour and became part of the EMDB program in 1951. By 1954 most of the network was open or under construction due to ongoing advocacy by N E MAC and the EMDB.

NE Road Network Reaches Three-Quarters Status

A year end review shows North East highway progress with about 577 miles on routes requested in 1950 now open or under construction. Provincial Trunk Highway segments total 246 miles with 205 active and 41 under construction plus 159 miles of all weather roads opened, 46 more under construction, bringing open or active mileage to 451 on the 577-mile plan. Additional PTH mileage was added after 1880, with 18 miles taken over in North East and more details follow.

Pine Falls Legion Elects 1954 Officers

At the Pine Falls Branch No. 64 Canadian Legion meeting on December 9, a new slate for 1954 was elected. Officers installed include president Roy Towler and vice presidents J. L. McNair and W. J. MacLeod, with secretary C. H. Frederick and treasurer E. J. Luchuk, among others. A Christmas Tree party followed with the ladies auxiliary.

Lac du Bonnet students presented their Christmas concert at Memorial Hall on Tuesday December 22. The program was lengthy as the children showcased Christmas spirit through a full lineup of performances.

A scanned notice requests renewal of a Manitoba subscription to The Leader. It shows date numerals like 12 11 53 indicating a year and asks send $2.00 for one year, printing name and address clearly, and allows one week for delivery with notification if non arrival.

Pine Falls Boy Receives Doctor of Philosophy Degree

Glen W. Mansell of Pine Falls earned a Doctor of Philosophy at Ohio State University December 18. He attended Lac du Bonnet High School, Manitoba University for four years with honors in science, earned a master's in science there in 1949, taught there briefly, and will join Dupont Chemical Company in Richmond, Virginia, on January 1.

Christmas program features Dicken's Carol with Scrooge star

In the afternoon, youngsters performed songs dances recitations and plays with candy and oranges. The evening showcase presents Dicken's Christmas Carol starring John Gurwinski as Scrooge. The rest of the program includes folk dancing led by Mrs Zaborniak the girls choir led by Mrs V C Hardy and Miss E Loewen. Master of ceremonies was the principal, Mr Hardy.

Whitemouth Children Present Christmas Concerts

Residents of Whitemouth and district enjoyed two Christmas concerts just before the holidays. The school program featured plays songs recitations and Santa Claus while Ross United church offered recitations and Christmas music. Children from the district displayed talent in both performances.

Brokenhead Students Hold Christmas Concert

A Christmas Concert was held on Thursday December 17 in the Brokenhead school auditorium. The program by the Brokenhead school students under the direction of Miss N Wipshinsky and Mr J Stokotel vy with Mrs S Kowalchuk as chairman featured dances drills recitations and plays before a capacity crowd. Santa appeared near the end and handed out gifts to the youngsters.
