Cromwell Social News From Phylis Mroz

Mr and Mrs Casmir Baker and daughter of Winnipeg visited Mr and Mrs Joe Kindermann. A farewell gathering was held August 24 for A Mroz and her son Alex from Chicago and for the Schluentz of Detroit, about 40 guests. Lunch was served. Others visited included Lt Mr and Mrs A Baker Winnipeg and Miss Eleanor Evertoski and Joe Wondowitch from Winnipeg. Leonard Schreyer now drives a 1946 one ton truck. John Modrzejewski and family shopped in Winnipeg. Frances Greschuk spent the weekend at her parents home.

Whitemouth Hospital to Open on Labor Day

Whitemouth hosts the official opening of a new hospital on Labor Day at 11 a.m. CST with dedicatory services and tours. The facility serves Rennie Elma River Hills and Seven Sisters and features a field day event organized by the hospital board and hospital aid with gate prizes and refreshments, ending in an evening dance.

India's 1950 Wheat Harvest Estimated At 222 Million Bushels

India's wheat harvest for 1950, completed in May, is officially estimated at 222 million bushels, up from last year's 217 million. Output, while higher than 1949, remains below prewar levels due to about 2 percent less planted area. Turkey sets 1950 grain support prices with wheat at $2.35 per bushel plus quality bonuses up to 19 cents and early delivery bonuses up to 39 cents.

Canada First Manitoba to Have Wild Rice Plant

The Hon. J. S. McDiarmid announces Manitoba will host Canada's first commercial wild rice processing and packaging plant this fall at Lac du Bonnet. Owned by J. W. Wade and under construction, it targets about 200000 pounds per season with modern equipment made by a Winnipeg firm.

Couple Marks 30th Wedding Anniversary

Nearly 200 friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. Shelson surprised them on their 30th wedding anniversary at St. Marys Hall Beausejour on Saturday evening August 19. A chest of silver was presented by A Weselak on behalf of the guests. The mayor and town councillors spoke in their honor. A lunch was served and a dance followed for the remainder of the evening.

Elmwood editor elected president of Manitoba weekly group

Norman S. McLean of Elmwood Herald was named president of the Manitoba Division, Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association, at the annual meeting at the Royal Alexandra hotel. R. S. Evans and F. R. Manning were elected first and second vice presidents, with J. R. McLachlan retiring as president. A. W. Hanks of The St. James Leader was re-appointed managing secretary treasurer for a 13th year. new directors include A. E. Lodwick, Mrs Une Philipps, A. H. Leech, H. B. Munro, T. E. Wilkins and others.

Virden Paper Wins Weekly Newspaper Editorial Trophy

The Dominion Textile trophy for best editorial page went to J. R. McLachlan of Virden Empire Advance, with A. W. Hanks of The St. James Leader second and D. K. Friesen of The Altona Echo third. Friesen’s paper also won first in best all-round newspaper for class over 1,250 circulation, while Deloraine Times topped under 1,250 with Reston Recorder second and Swan River Star and Times third.

Beausejour Couple Fetes 25th Wedding Anniversary

Nearly 200 guests gathered at St. Mary's hall to honor Mr. and Mrs. E. Gretsinger on their 25th wedding anniversary. The event featured a dinner, a music program, toasts led by L. Matlin, and a grandclock presentation from guests. Out-of-town attendees hailed from Winnipeg Lac du Bonnet Sturgeon Falls Vermilion Bay and Pine Falls among others.
