Waterton Dam Nears Completion In Alberta Project
After five years of construction the Waterton dam in south western Alberta approaches completion as the final stage of the St Mary Irrigation Project. The project will enable irrigation for up to 500 000 acres with 340 000 already developed. Canada will use water from the Belly St Mary and Waterton rivers under a federal provincial plan. The dam provides storage for 140 000 acre feet and the embankment rises 180 feet over the river. Finishing the concrete spillway is underway and a five mile diversion canal remains to connect to Belly River facilities.
