Large colony of red sided garter snakes found near Estevan
About 1,000 red sided garter snakes were discovered four miles from Estevan. The snakes were found by Tom Gentles Regina and examined by the Saskatchewan Museum of Natural History. Dr. Robert W. Nero said the gulley, a former mine cave 100 feet long, 10 feet wide and 20 feet deep, held hundreds more unseen snakes. The animals spend winter in hibernation from September or October to April or May, surviving on body fat and sometimes burrowing into ant hills. The museum thanks the public for tips aiding wildlife studies and notes amateur naturalists often discover notable species.
