Hail and Wind Ravage Lac du Bonnet Farmers

Reports describe a severe hail and wind storm near Lac du Bonnet last Friday. Crops were destroyed, barns damaged, trees uprooted, and power and water were disrupted as hydro crews repaired outages through the night. Local farmers in Brightstone and Lee River areas face repeated losses over three consecutive years.

River Hills Defeat Seven Sisters in Semi Finals

The River Hills Hungry Nine swept the Seven Sisters in two straight games to advance to the South Division North Eastern Softball finals. Eric Berrick pitched both games, Ernie Harris caught, and Maurice Peles hit a homer with John Peterson adding a three base hit. Seven Sisters threatened late in game two as Ray Hanke hit a three bagger but River Hills held on.

Golf Professionals Compete for Seagram Shield in Hamilton

About 60 Canadian PGA pros entered the CPGA championship to be held August 11-12 at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ancaster. Notables include Pat Fletcher, Stan Leonard, Gordie Byrdson, Tom Gray, Al Balding, Murray Tucker, Dick Borthwick, Jules Hewitt, Bill Kerr and Stan Horne. Leonard is the 1954 champion. The event serves as a warm-up for the Canadian Open at Weston from August 17-20.

Three Employees Retire at Seven Sisters Falls

Three of Seven Sisters oldest, George Hillman Arne Sigurdsson and William Raines, were honored at a farewell gathering in the Seven Sisters power house on Friday July 29 marking the end of their last day with Winnipeg Electric Co Their colleagues from maintenance operating staff and construction crew attended. Each retiree received gifts including a wrist watch a Gladstone bag and a mantle radio and a framed plant photo was presented to each by Carl Birstow assisted by the company officials.

Honey price hike by Manitoba Honey Marketing Board

The No 1 white honey floor price rose 50 cents per case at wholesale, about one cent per pound, with 48 pounds per case. The floor remains below wholesale market levels as stocks run low and this year's crop is expected to be below normal due to depleted hives and poor early-season conditions.

Ten year old saves child from well in Beausejour incident

Leonard Mazur, age ten, saved three year old Marvin Russell who fell 20 feet into a neighbor's open well on Friday July 29. Leonard tied a rope to his waist, descended the shaft with his father in the blacksmith shop, and returned both to safety with the boy unhurt aside from a few scratches.

Canada’s trade with Japan shows a narrowing gap with exports to Japan in the first five months of 1955 totaling 35.882 million dollars, down 17.5 million from the comparable period in 1954 while imports from Japan rise.

Second Mining Company to Drill in Cat Lake Area

In the Cat Lake region near Bernie Lake thirty miles northeast of Lac du Bonnet Violamac Mines announces a drilling program as a second company enters the area Fifteen hundred sixty five additional claims may be acquired while Noble Lennox reports the Lithium Corp of Canada claims 27 existing claims and a 1938 rendering shows one million tons of ore with near fifteen percent lithium oxide at the Bernie Lake site Vi o l amac has drilled twenty six holes and is now cutting a dike at about eleven hundred feet depth. Local Norpax Oils and Metals reports a strong nickel copper intersection near the Werner Lake area with a true width of twelve feet and minor copper nickel grades.

Obituary: Ex-Reeve of Brokenhead Dies at 70 McLeod

Alexander James McLeod 70 of 302 Linden Avenue East Kildonan died Sunday July 24 in Deer Lodge hospital. A WWI veteran of 118th Battalion Mil Medal recipient he served Brokenhead municipality as councillor 1938 43 and reeve 1944 46 also drainage maintenance trustee and secretary of the drainage inquiry. Survived by wife Sarah Violet daughter Mrs Robert Kapilik two sons Murdock Irvine Angus Bruce three grandchildren. Funeral July 27 Morduch Bros Funeral Home Elmwood Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home in charge. Born in Yorkshire England 1874 came to Kenora Ontario 1882 married 1892 settled Whitemouth district 62 years ago.
