Northern, an amalgamation of Replogle and Robert Smith’s leftover teams from the 1956 season, tallied both its TDs in ^ the first half of the contest which 1 featured strong defensive play on both sides,* Northern’s big line, largest in 1 i average weight In the «ounty, played well against an opposing forward wall its equal in size, while Northern’s pony backs, among the smallest in the county, were able to outdo their opposite numbers who were slightly larger.Northern’s halfback Ernest Nave emerged as the offensive star of the contest despite his diminuitve size. Nave tallied Northern's opening TD late in the first quarter, going over from 11 yards out through guard. To set up the TD, the Maroon drove 80 yard* jn eleven plays after the game opened with a no-decision exchange of punts between the teams near midfield.Northern tallied again in the second period on a pretty pas* play from Nave to left end. Jack Troutman, who fielded the well-thrown ball nicely in the end zone on the 17-yard play.After both Northern TDs. plunge* for the extra point fell short by ir.ches.Northern contained Juniata Valley well in the second half, stopping two drives by the invaders. The visitors made their most determined efifort in the fourth period, when they advanced to Northern's 9-'3rd-line and had a first down there after a 45-yard advance. Northern held their four-play series to a net loss of one yard and took the ball on downs. At game’s end Northern had moved fropn their own 10 to Juniata Valley’s 40 on a promising advance.Both teams displayed excellent defenses in the game, in which the net gain in scrimmage of the two totalled less than 300 yards, and the longest play of the game was a 23-yard advance.The summary;NORTHERN JUN.
