Vernon Roms, then gave up one touchdown and staved off a determined Vernois bid for another to escape with a 13-6 victory in the football opener at Mattoon last night.THE YARDSTICKMT V. Matt*Coach Chuck Oyler’s Mattoon varsity, rated as a leading contender in the Big 12 conference this season, was expected to handle the Rams. In the early going it appeared that the Green Wave might stack up a lopsided win.But the 18-0 count, coming near the start of the second period, was as lopsided as Mattoon could make it. Coach Frank Chnrnak’s Rams rushed to the barricades with a hardworking defense, then grabbedcontrol to score a touchdown of their own before halftime.Neither club could hit paydirt in the final half. Mt. Vernon staged a drive which carried to Mattoon’s 20 in the last quarter where a fourth-down shot for yardage just missed by inches. It was a key play, stalling an offensive march which might have given the Vernois a tie for the night’s work.Mattoon defeated Mt. Vernon 19-12 in the opening game last season.Veteran quarterback Joe Spurgeon, halfback Dick Tate and star end Dick Ronchetti were spotted as lads capable of giving trouble to the Rams, and each of them had his moment in the Mattoon victory.However, It was 1. C. Foster, a 150-pound Negro junior halfback, who scored the first TD for the Green Wave and who repeatedly scooted for yardage when It seemed that the Rams had stymied the Mattoon attack.Ron Simmons, senior fullback,and co-captain Jim Carter were standouts for Mt. Vernon on defense.The Vernois attack was V vown in reverse at the start of the contest. The locals got in a hole on the opening kickoff which went into the end zone. McReynolds also jumped on a Mattoon fumble and Lanny Shaw intercepted a pass to stall the Green Wave twice.The Rams' last gasp came midway in the fourth period. Starting from their own 47, the locals moved to Mattoon’s 80 on runs by Carter and Edwards. Carter got four to the 20, then Kite got five in two plunges to tlio 21. On fourth down it appeared that Edwards hail the necessary yardage— hut the refs said “No” by Inches.
