Colonels Ranked No.l19 Seniors Dominate WoodmenBy RUSS POTTS Star Sports Editor Combine 19 lettermen with a senior dominated team that ranks 3S one of the fastest in Northwestern League history and you get the bright picture of the James Wood Colonels for 1968.Pursuit is the name of the game for the Woodmen of Coach Walter Barr as they gun for the third NW League grid title in the school's history.HUSTLE is another attributea tough opening night on October 13 at Woodbridge High. The Colonels are light and fast, with only one player on the 63-man squad weighing over 200 pounds.He's Bobby Fulton, a 6-5, 215 pound sophomore that already makes college scouts drool. Bobby has missed a lot of pre-season practice, however with a blood clot In his leg that has been slow to clear.Nineteen seniors comprise the core of the ‘68 Colonels as they roar off a fantastic 9-1 record and second place in the NW League last Fall.Only a 14-0 loss at the hands of arch rival Handley in the sea-son’s finale ‘Dream Game’ prevented a perfect season for the Gold and Blue. This year, the Woodmen think the shoe's on the other foot.Thirteen seniors departed off last year’s great team. Stone is a transfer from Mus-selman and an excellent linebacker prospect as well.Tackle is in the hands of Fulton. Archie Anderson (5-11 177pound sophomore) and Rodger Soule, a 5-9, 185 pound senior.Guards are: Dickie Shickle, 5-11, 155 pound scrappy senioKeith Dubose, another scrapper at 5-11, 160, and Richard Cummings, a bright senior prospect at 170, 5-11.EARL Foreman and Strother Adams, both 150 pounders, are the leading center candidates. Both are seniors and lettermen.Quarterback Mike Headley is a big key for 1968 success. The southpaw senior (5-11, 160) makes the Colonels go, is an excellent leader and can run and throw with equal ability. Headley is a three-year starter.Bill Gentry, 5-8, 135 pound senior, and sophomores MikeWhittle (6-2, 155) andScottyNew. lin (5-10, 145) round out the quarterback corps.Junior Chettie Spielman, another college prospect at 5-11, 170, heads the left halfback posi-tion. Senior Dave Wert(6-0,160), sophomore Joe Cooper (5-9, 150) and Calvin Cain, a speedy, 5-11, 150 pound junior, are other top prospects.Right halfback shows more experience as senior speedster Larry Boyd returns for another year. Larry, (5-10, 168) is the team's best breakaway threat. Donnie Barton (5-11, 148) and Danny Crim (5-11,160) back up Boyd along with junior Scotty Newlin.FULLBACK is headed by sen-or letterman Dave Goode, a iurefire choice for All-Area. ave, another in a family line I five athletes, weights only 160, ut is noted for his tire and crappy attitude.
