Oct. 22.— Maryland was out-rushed, out-- passed, out-played and out-flrst I downed today, but fortunately was • not outscored and managed to J beat N. C. State. 14-6. in a game i the Terps doubtless would prefer t to forget.A homecoming crowd of 14.500 ’ in Riddick Stadium watched under sunny skies and in an 80-degree heat, but for State the 1 weather-was all that was pleasant. The Wolfpack really bun-1 i gled this one in the thinking de-1; partment in losing their fifth jStraigh this season and eighth in •two years*.1 Maryland spent almost the entire second half on defense and put the game beyond reach at 1 a time when State had the ball.5 Dave Cianelli, a guard from ! Hagerstown, intercepted Ed Moo-1 ney’s pass on the State 43-yard 1 line and scored his first collegiate touchdown as he ran over the goal line without a hand on him.Modzelewski Scores.The Terps had to come from behind to take the lead at the . half. Mighty Mo Modzelewski ran wide lor 10 yards and a touchdown and Bob Dean added the extra point, as he did following the Terps second-half score. A 42-yard pass from Joe Tucker toBod Shewmonski set up the touchdown.Other than its first touchdown drive. Maryland was not inside State’s 35-yard line and in the second half the Terps did not make a first down. They held the ball for only five plays in the third period, but twice got tough' on defense when the Wolfpack j was on the move deep in Maryland territory.State scored late in the first i period after a freak break gave it the ball on the Maryland 23.1 Mooney's pass was intercepted by Jim Larue, who fumbled and Tony Romanowsky recovered for the Wolfsack on the Maryland 23. State was helped when a penalty i pot the hall on the Maryland yard line, but after drawing a[ 5-yard penalty for backfleld in motion, Mooney hit Steve Kosillaj in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Charles West-brok missed the point after touchdown and for a while that miss looked mighty big. State has lost two games by the margin of an extra point.State Goes Into Reverse.The Wolfpack reached the height of futility in the third period.
