Lions Win, 26-25,In Hectic ContestScore Two Touchdowns on Wiencko!s Passes in Final MinutesBy ED PLAISTEDTrailing by 12 points with less than five minutes left to play, quarterback Tony Wiencko fired two touchdown passes and also hit Bob Shemeth with an aerial for the deciding extra point as Bassick High school’s oft-maligned Lions struck down a favored Roger Ludlowe football team, 26 to 25, yesterday at Ludlowe field in Fairfield.Wiencko, who scored Bassick’s first TE£on a quarterback sneak in the second period, hit Shemeth with a short pass up the middle to cut his team’s deficit to six points (25-19) with 4:23 left to play. With time running out, Wiencko took to the air againafter gaining the ball, and his third-down pass was gathered in by halfback John Tower for 57 yards and a 25-all tie. Shemeth snared Wiencko’s pass for the extra point and the margin of victory.First Win Since 1952It was a game that kept the estimated 6,500 spectators seething and roaring throughout the boiling action of this 23rd an* nual Thanksgiving Day tilt. It was the first triumph for Bassick in the series since the Bridgeport school’s 38-6 victoryin 1952.It was a hotly-fought contest, and almost was marred by a riot in the closing minutes of play. With about 18 seconds left, a*pile-up resulted in a fist fightthe ball for Bassick’s second touchdown.Coach Emil Taft’s Ludlowe team struck for its final score witb suddenness as Fritzsche hit Andy Marak for a 64-yard pass and run play. This gave Ludlowe a 25-13 advantage, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the aroused forces of Bassick Coach Herb Harrigton.Ludlowe ended the season with a 5-3 record while Bassick finished with a 4-4-1 mark. The Fairfield squad enjoyed two-touchdown leads, but was beaten at their own game—passing.After a scoreless first period in which Ludlowe drove 69 yards for a first down on the Bassick one-yard line, only to lose the ball on a fumble, the Fairfield team struck for 23 quick points. Co-Captain Bob Doran scored on a one-yard plunge to cap a 38-yard sustained drive, and Carl Fritzsche passed to Joe Samuel* man for the extra point.Bassick took to the air but Wiencko’s pass was defected in to the flat and grabbed by Oscar Deer, who raced 57 yards for a touchdown to give Ludowe a 13-0 advantage. .After the following kickoff, a Wiencko pass deflected by Ludlowe defenders into the hands of Bassick’s Hank Caraway, who was stopped at the Fairfield 14. A personal foul gave the Lions a first down on the one, and their signal-caller crashed over, Wiencko also passed to Caraway lor the point after touchdown.Ludlowe Drives 60 YardsNo sooner than the crowd was seated, Ludlowe drove 60 yards in five plays to pay dirt, capped by Doran's 10-yard, off-tackle run for the TD. A 45-yard pass completed by Fritzsche featured the drive.Trailing by 19-7 at half-time, the Lions returned after the intermission and shifted from their “T” into a single-Wing offense and took to the air.
