CAHA approves female playersBy JOHN SffORT REGINA (CP) - A plan to welcome female hockey players into the Canadian Amateur Hockey Assocation (CAHA) was approved Thursday. The closing plenary session of the CAHA’s annual meeting approved a resolution calling for sepa ra te —butequal—status for female players and teams.Vice-president Frank McKinnon of Winnipeg submitted a proposal for establishment of a female hockey council soon after a resolution calling for an amendment to an existing regulation that only males be included in the CAHA was defeated.McKinnon’s motion said,a female hockey council should be established, starting at the branch level, to entourage programs for females. The resolution specified that females would not be encouraged or allowed to play in direct competition with males. The development was greeted enthusiastically by Sandra Legge of Beechy, Sask., one of several women attending sessions here this week.Miss Legge said some females might object that the resolution prevents integration between the sexes but she was confident opposition would be slight.“The way it has been is self-limiting,” she said. “Some young girls have played in boys' competition but that was the only way open to them.Sooner or later, young girls would outgrow the possibility of playing in men’s or boys events. This way, girls will have an opportunity to continue in hockey and that’s what we hoped for.”Disputes arising from the 1978 Centennial Cup playoff were handled at the session with little public discussion. Junior Vice-President Roland Mercier won passage of a resolution saying players, officials and leagues who do not■abide by CAHA rules will be barred from Centennial Cup playoffs.Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Prince Albert Raiders of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and Merritt Centennials of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League were involved in a longstanding western dispute while Guelph Platers and Charlottetwon Eagles were involved in a separate dispute in the east.Calgary won the AJHL title but was suspended by the Alberta Amateur HockeyWhereit's atRegistration for A and B divisions of Girl's Fastball Association will be taken Saturday from 10 a.m. - 12 noon at the Community Service’s Building.
