By BOB SONENFELD Herald Sports EditorCOAL CITY — Minooka put on its usual outstanding effort in track to capture the Grundy County track meet Wednesday.The Indians, who had just 13 competitors because of a frosh-soph conference meet which attracted the other stars, totaled 96!6 points.Coal City was second, 70; Mazon-Verona - Kinsman had46 Mj; Gardner-SouthWilmington, 40*^ and Morris pulled up the rear unexpectedly with 30*2 points.“We realized Minooka was extremely strong,” said Coaler coach Denny Best. “We were just hoping for a good showing from everyone and we got it.“It was good competition for the district coming up(Saturday, 9 a.m.) at Peotone.It brought out the best in our 440relay.”The Coalers 440 unit, comprised of Jeff Enger, Tim Fehr, Mike Kaiser and Mark Wisman, staged an upset win of 45.7 over Minooka, one of nine Grundy County meet records to fall.The real star of the sunny-skied afternoon was Reed-Perry, Minooka’s brilliant athlete. The well-built curly-haired senior won the 100 (10.4), leaned over and won the 220 (23.5) and won the 4^0 (52.2) — all meet marks.Minooka broke meet marks in the mile and two-mile relays. John Fillipitch, Terry Smith, John Underhlil and Bill Drew (the 880 winner) ran the mile relay and Dan Sauerwein, Tony Mattingly, Fillipitch and Smith ran the two-mile.Minooka’s other winners were John Underhill, the mile in 4:44.4; Mark Hunt, the lowhurdles, 43.6; and Doug Powell, the high hurdles which wasn’t a meet mark like the others.“I’m pretty proud of them,” said Minooka coach Rich Bowman. “I didn’t expect to win it. We had 13 guys out and all of them came way with ribbons.”In perhaps the finest matchup Drew outkicked Morris’ Tracy Dorheim to win the 880 in 2:01.9, a meet record.Coal City drew its supportfrom winners Dave Bogash (discus), Eric Jensen (shot) and Bill Crawford (high jump).MVK had the winning 880 relay team. Dave Crane, Tim Braghini, Greg Williams and Vic Rexroade ran it.GSW’s Craig Male, who admitted he has lost for three years to Perry in the 100, came awfully close in that event for an upset, but still managed wins in the triple jump, 39”11^”, a meet mark, and the long jump.Morris was paced by Barry Sjostrom (a record 10(46) in the two-mile and George Dergo, an 11-foot meet record in the pole vault.Minooka placed second in the Northeast frosh-soph meet, being edged out by Yorkville 73-72^ points. Tom Clennon won the mile in 4:45 and the half-mile in 2:08 for the distance-blessed Indians.
