One-leaaed skier winsworld bronze medalGRYON, Switzerland (CP) — Ulrich Rompel of Calgary and Lorna Manzer of Rossland, B.C., won bronze medals Thursday at the winter world championships for the disabled.Rompel, 37, a gardener, placed third in his category for the partially blind in a giant slalom race, while Manzer, 29, a ski instructor, was third on the same 33-gate giant slalom course for the below-the-knee amputee category.“The course today was nicely done, the turns were very smooth,” said Rompel of the course set by Canadian coach Butch Boutry, also of Rossland.Manzer won the giant slalom silver medal two years ago at the Olympics for the Disabled in Norway and was hoping for better here.“Winning the bronze is okay, but 1 sure wish I could have won the gold, ’’ she said.Reinhil Moller of West Germany won Manzer’s race in a combined time of two minutes, 42.08 seconds. Manzer posted 2:48.09.In Rompers race, Jean-Pierre Kurth of Switzerland was the winner with a time of 2:41.53. Rompel clocked2:42.52.Jacques Levesque of Terr-bonne, Que., was eighth of 11 racers, clocking 3:06.91.In the giant slalom for the totally blind, Rod Hersey of Halifax, second after the first run, missed the fifth gate during the second run and was disqualified.Earlier in the day, Hersey collided with his guide, Cathy Kerr of Halifax, during a training run and a ski broke two of her front teeth.In amputee events for men, Allan Zimmerman of Edmonton was 11th of 19 competitors in the single, below-the-knee amputee class, posting 2:38.82, compared with 2:18.14 for the winner, Markus Raumauer of Austria.In the event for upper-limb disablities, Michael Sawyer of Banff, Alta., was 13th of 16 competitors with a time of 2:3.54. The winner, Rolf Heinz-mann of Switzerland, clocked2:14.53.VICKERYIn the single-leg category for men, Greg Oswald of Winnipeg was the chief Canadian hope. Oswald had won a silver medal at the Olympics for the Disabled and was fourth afterthe first run Wednesday.However, he fell on the steep course, although he managed to clear the gate and finish sixth. His time was 2:42.84. Christian Hausle of Austriawon in 2:34.62.Tim Hunt of Vancouver placed 10th in 2:45.97 and Phil Lorimer of Toronto was 28th in3:14.24.In women’s events, Lynda Chyzyk of Vancouver, finished seventh of 11 competitors in a lower-limb disablity class, posting 3:16.96. Annemie Schneider of West Germanywas first in2:44.07.RuggersrollBrent Craven scored five consecutive goals to lead the Carpet Shop Ruggers to a 9-5thrashing of Richardson’sJewellery in Medicine HatIntermediate Hockey League action Thursday night at the Arena Convention Centre.Also scoring for the Ruggers were Hal Berson with two goals, while Brian Schaeffer and Merle Lawrence addedsingles.Rob Van Slyke and Ken Moser paced Richardson’s with two goals each while Terry Bartman added one.The Ruggers took three minor penalties andRinhardson’s took two.
