Medicine Hat hosts 34th annual bonspiel opening day results

Hall of Bow Island edged Medicine Hat’s Jean Hall 8-7 on opening day of the Medicine Hat Ladies 34th Annual Bonspiel at the Curling Club. Sixty four rinks participate across five events with draws featuring numerous tight finishes from 1 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Finals are scheduled for Sunday.

Giles Edges Hackner Rival In Canadian Curling Meet

Brent Giles of British Columbia upset Bruce Munro and his Ontario rink 10-4 in the 13th round to move to 7-2, just behind leader Hackner at 8-1 as round-robin play at the Keystone Centre continued. Other notable results included Paul Hunter of Whitehorse beating Charlie Sullivan 5-4 and Mel Logan 9-2 as teams chased one playoff berth with six squads still in contention.

Women to skip in Canadian mixed curling championships

At Canadian Curling Association meetings the rule banning women from skipping mixed teams was repealed enabling a woman to skip with men and women alternating in other positions. Six Hall of Fame inductees were announced including Hazel Jamieson. A $5 participants fee will be charged starting 1982-83 to cover a $75 000 budget shortfall. The association also clarified push broom sweeping rules to conform with international standards.

Kehler rink wins Canadian Open Legion Curling title

The Al Kehler rink of Regina defeated Ron Rasmussen of Manitoba 5-2 to capture the Canadian Open Legion Curling Championship in Truro Nova Scotia. New Brunswick upset Mel Jordan of Alberta 12-4 after a string of losses, ending a potential tie with Kehler.

One legged skiers win world bronze at disabled champs

Ulrich Rompel of Calgary and Lorna Manzer of Rossland win bronze in giant slalom events for partially blind and below the knee amputee categories at the Winter World Championships for the Disabled in Gryon Switzerland. Rompel posts 2 42 52 and Manzer 2 48 09 as Swiss Rene Kurth and others claim wins.

Ruggers Dominate Richardson's In IHHL Action

Brent Craven scored five straight goals to lift the Carpet Shop Ruggers to a 9 5 win over Richardson's Jewellery Thursday night at the Arena Convention Centre in Medicine Hat Intermediate Hockey League play. Hal Berson added two for the Ruggers while Brian Schaeffer and Merle Lawrence added singles. Rob Van Slyke and Ken Moser scored twice for Richardson's and Terry Bartman added one. The Ruggers had three minor penalties to Richardson's two.
