Ted Hit Career Peak as Andrews SeniorAs far as we’re concerned. Ted Nelson reached his potential April 22, 1961, when as a seniorhe had a phenomenal afternoon. That afternoon he ran the 440-yard dash in the then national record time of 46.5, and sped through the 220 dash on the straigtaway in 20.6. IWe maintain that Nelson reached his peak that afternoon and that is is to the credit of the Aggie quartermiler that he has been able to stay near that peakthrough four years of college. There are two reasons why Nelson the college athlete has notbeen able to surpass Nelson thehigh school superstar. In the first place, he stands only 5-10 and weighs only 158. Neither are the marks of the great quartermilers like Adolph Plummer. Earl Young, Ulis Williams, Eddie Southern and OtisDavis.Any one of these could eat soup off of Nelson’s head. Thequartermilers who dip into thelow 4(’s — 45’s have been tall, rangy individuals with ground-eating strides. In the second place, Nelson was coached in high sehcxl by Max Goldsmith, a man who hadonly one other rival in Texas schoolboy circles (Boh Grose-close of Abilene) in getting the most, or even more, from hisrunners. Both men have produced state champions out of boys who wouldn't have reached the statemeet for other coaches.Nelson was one of those hoyswho developed early and reached his career peak early and Goldsmith got his best efforts everytime he ran.He continued to give his best efforts id 1 ex as AM and though he hasn’t been the super college star that people wrongly and unfairly expected him toWr jl -■ it
