New RoughRiders coach was aide at NortheasternBy Marc MorehouseGazette sportswriterIf the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders’ new ice arena goes up as quickly as the team found its new coach/general manager, Cedar Rapids will have cross checks and bloody noses before the end of the week.Officially, the RoughRiders went coach-less for less than 24hours.Mark Carlson was named coach/general manager of the United States Hockey League team Tuesday, a day after theteam acknowledged the departure of coach/general manager Steve Nelson, who left to become an assistant at ColoradoHOCKEYCollege.Nelson spent one season with the USHL franchise.Carlson, 30, comes to Cedar Rapids after two seasons as an assistant at Northeastern University, a Division I program in the Hockey East Conference.The RoughRiders will be more Nelson’s team this year than Carlson’s, but it shouldn’t take long for Carlson to put his stamp on the RoughRiders.He was was recruiting coordinator at Northeastern. Twelve USHL players were on North-eastern’s roster last season.“I want players with a good blend of skill and toughness,” said Carlson, who, prior to Northeastern, spent a season as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of Massachu-setts-Lowell.“I feel confident going into the USHL,” Carlson said. ‘‘It comes down to recruiting and that comes down to nothing more than hard work and getting after it.”■ Turn to 5C: Carlson
