LARGE CROWD HEARS REV. PERCENTE SUNDAY NIGHT!A congregation that packed the auditorium of the College Avenue Baptist church Sunday evening heard Rev. Joe Percente, one-time boxing champ, ex-gangster, and former trainer of the late President Theodore Roosevelt, preach.During the sermon, which held the rapt attention of the large group, he told something of hiseventful life. Born the son of a i French-Italian father and a Cher-} okee mother, his mother being a daughter of a chief of that tribe, he moved with the Cherokees to Oklahoma. After the death of his mother his story moves rapidly to fame as lightweight boxing champion, to wealth as a saloon-pro-prietor and later as politician and , gangster, to acquaintance with the great as trainer for Theodore Roosevelt, and to his conversion and decision to preach a little less than 10 years ago, when he gave away his fortune to his family and * to those whom he felt he had wronged.Rev. Percente will remain in Bryan to attend the Creath-Brazos Baptist Association workers’ con-jferenee Tuesday.
