DOG SAVES LIVES.“Shine” Reed Proud of Dog He Sold Recently to Beloit Man.Several months ago “Shine” Reed sold to J. C. Wallace, of Beloit, a bull-pup. The price paid for the puppy was small compared to what it would take to buy the same dog today. Last Thursday morning the puppy climbed upon the bed and awakened Mr. and Mrs. Wallace by whining and licking their faces. It was some time before they were thoroughly aroused, but when they were they found that the house was filled with fumes of coal gas. In some manner one of the doors of the coal stove in the adjoining room had become opened, and the escaping gas would in a short time have asphyxiated them had not the dog awakened them.As it was, Mrs. Wallace fainted before she could reach and open a window, and Mr. Wallace lost consciousness and fell to the floor three times before the fresh air revived him. Two children in another part of the house also suffered from the effects of the escaped gas, and all members of the family were seriously ill the greater part of the next day.A Beloit exchange has the following to say about the matter. “It was about 5:30 o’clock this (Thursday) morning, when the little bull pup climbed upon the bed and awakened the sleepers. Mrs. Wallace was the first to arise, and she felt so strangely that she thought she had the grip. She fell in a faint on the floor before she had gone far from the bed.“Mr. Wallace realized what was the trouble and started for the stove, but before he could reach it he fell heavily to the floor cutting a gash over his left eye. He was taken to bed by his wife and daughter. Later when he again tried to arise, he again lost consciousness. A doctor finally was called and relieved the condition of the family.”
