Fertile captures firstRegion 8 team mat titleby JIM CARRINGTON The Fertile Falcons lived up to their Number 2 rating in state wrestling circles Thursday, sweeping to the first Region 8 team tournament championship at Bagley high school.The Falcons ousted Bemidji 25-16 in the semi-finals and topped District 32 champ Greenbush 32-11 in the title match. Greenbush had beaten Crookston 27-15 in the semifinals.The Falcons used their season-long formula to win, getting successive wins from its solid six and adding another pair of triumphs in the other weights. Against Bemidji these came at 105 and 180 Against the Tigers they were at 112 and heavyweight.The Jacks -Fertile battle was generally conceded as the key match in the regional and turned out to be just that. The Jacks took a 7-3 lead in the first three weights as Tom Grimes won 5-0at 98 and Nestle Grimes recorded a superior decision 18-3 at 112. However, neither could gain a pin and in between Kevin Oien stopped Dwight Lewis 7-2 in a key match.Then came the solid six with Leon Sulerud, Darrell Larson, Jeff Dale, Don Morvig, Mark Langved and Kevin Lmdberg all winning in order, giving up only four points, all on escapes, among the sixThis gave the Falcons a 22-7 lead. Gerry Oman sliced six from the bulge with a first period pin of Norm Eide. This left the Jacks needing a pin and superior decision in the last two bouts to win. Dicisions by Mark Novacek and Brazier staked the Tigers to a 6-0 lead This time it was Marlin Halstad who broke through with a 9-5 decision over Anderson at 112.Along came the solid six, this time recording two pins and four decisions to take a 27-6 lead.
