Abilene runner places first in eight-mile road raceLast Saturday’s Annual Cotton Patch run sponsored by the West Texas Running Club proved to be a great success as road racers from as far down as Houston and neighboring New Mexico put on their running shoes and competed in the eight-mile and three-mile event.A total of 43 runners competed in the men’s eight miles with 24-year-old Scott McCaskill of Abilene crossing the finish line first with an impressvie time of 45:24. Less than a minute behind hime came Lubbock resident Lolo Mercado with a time of 46:19. Taking third place was 41-year-old Wayne Jones of Dallas with a very good time of 46:33.Among the top 20 finishers was BHS Cross-Country coach Daniel Fonseca. He placed 11th with a time of 49:25. Another Brownfieldite challenging the eight mile course, which was plaqued by West Texas gusty winds, was Art Rutherford who placed 34th. He covered the course slightly over an hour with the time of 1:00:42.In the women’s division, 33-year-old Cherill Easterling of Coahoma took first place and beatmany men with an excellent time of 59:32. The other four women tackling the eight mile race were Ms. Sosebee (Ropesville) 1:007::36; S. Jane Jones of Tatum, N.M.; Robin Wood of Ropesville and Dianne Kelly of Lubbock.Placing first in the three-mile run was Cliff McCurdy with a swift time of 16:21. The Canadian resident beat the second place finisher, Robin Powell, by 22 seconds. Powell had a time of 16:43. In third place was Karl Wolfe, 19, of Lubbock with a time of 17:09.The only Brownfield competitor in the three-mile race was Eddie Elizardo who placed fifth with a time of 17:36.Fifteen-year-old Christian Gribble took the women’s three miler. The teenager from Big Spring covered the course with a time of 23:10. She wasfollowed by Lynda McC-leery of Hobbs and Roxanne Robertson, also of Hobbs. No women from Brownfield ran in either the eight or three mile races.
