---- V --ketball circles and even a casual follower of high school sports probably knows her name. She’s averaging 17.8 points a game this year and doing a lot more for her team than just putting the ballthrough the hoop.“Frances is one of the best all-around players I’ve coached,” said Barbara Garlinger. “Not just on offense, but she plays good defense and is a good rebounder. She wants to correct things if she’s doing them wrong.“Having her on the team means a lot. Not just for her playing, but for her attitude and leadership.” The Homettes aren’t exactly burning up the conference this year. But while Aiken trudges its way through a dreary 4-9 season, Mack continues to turnin virtuoso performances. She’s a team player, not a glory girl, so it’s certain that the losses affect her. She’s somewhat philosophical about her team’s poor record.“I understand when you’re young you’re going to make mistakes,” said Mack, the only senior on the squad. “I understand that it could be because (her teammates) are not as experienced as I am.” Ironically, Mack was just a few feet away from playing her high school ball for one of the best teams in the state. She runs that ball team. Anyone would like to have her on yourteam.”Garlinger thinks the question is irrelavent.“It’s a hypothetical question, a question that doesn’t need to be ask,” said Garlinger. “I don’t think that you should put Frances in a situation like that by asking her that question.”Mack, who developed a sizeable reputation as a basketball player while at Schofield Middle School, didn’t start at Aiken in her freshman year. But as a sophomore, Mack was named to the All-Tournament team in the Aiken County Classic. She also made the All-County team and was an honorable mention to the All-CSRA team. She repeated the honors in her junior year, but she made the All-CSRA team as a full member. She’ll probably repeat again this season, and she’s already been nominated to the All-State team.(See Mack, Page 5B)
