Tatum Satisfied With Terps' Mark, Praises Cianelli's WorkBy George Huber better than expected and TatumMaryland wrapped up Its foot- lists Halfback Ed Modzelewski, ball season Saturday with a 63-7 Halfback Joe Petruzzb and Tackle triumph over Virginia Tech for Krouse among that group.. That: a 7-2-1 record. That wasn't quite was because of injuries. They as good as the 9-1 season and a are good players, but nobody can bid to a major bowl predicted!Perform well when they're hurt, for the Terrapins by their more Mo wasn't as good this year as ardent supporters this season, but he was as a sophomore. He was Coach Jim Tatum expresses him- injured against Michigan State self as very satisfied. and no sooner got back in chapeI would like to have a record then he was hurt against Duke, like that every year.” said Tatum. would have made a difference We beat some pretty good ** *ie “ac* ^en with us all the teams.Maryland victories were over Navy, Michigan State. Georgetown. Duke. George Washington.West Virginia and Virginia Tech. The losses were to Georgia and North Carolina State and the tie was with North Carolina.Michigan State was our best victory, and the loss to State our biggest disappointment. Tatum said last night in discussing the | season. But I think that all in jail we had a good year. We had some disappointments, naturally, but also plenty to be proud about. The schedule had good teams all the way, but wasn’t balanced enough. We weren't ready for Georgia in that first game. We just weren't in shape and the heat killed us.Little Mo Filled Gap.“I would like to start with something a bit easier and build up to stronger teams every week. It's hard to start with Georgia. Navy and Michigan State and keep at a high pitch all season and we weren't able to do it. Frankly I like next year's schedule better and I only hope we can do well jwith it.The play of several individuals gave Tatum his most pleasant moments during the season. The way a lot of sophomores came through particularly pleased the big coach. We had a lot of first-year men who played as good as any of the more experienced players, and that helped a lot. said Tatum. Scar-bath (Johnny Scarbath. quarterback) and Fullerton (Joe Fullerton. halfback) were a big help and I think that if we'd had them against Carolina it wouldn’t have been a tie. We don't cry a lot about injuries, but when we didn't have those two it hurt.“Little Mo (Dick Modzelewski 235-pound tackle) was great on defense. I'd say he was as good as any lineman I had this year.I'm glad I have him to take Ray Krouse's place next year. In fact, he took it this year when Krouse was sick at first and then hurt, and I had a hard time getting Krouse back into the lineup after the great way Mo played. There was one player all the sports writers overlooked, continued Tatum, “and that was Dave Cianelli. All our opponents told us their scouts picked him as our best line backer, and he was just that. He is a junior and he’s another player who will help us next year. John Alder-, ton. our defensive right end, was 1 another good player a lot of folks i overlooked, but it was nice to have a sophomore Ilk- that break into the defensive lineup.Injuries Slowed Several.Tom Cosgrove, our offensive center, was another sophomore who went great, and so did Pete Augsburger at end. Augsburger was much better than I had a right to expect.Of course, everybody didn't playKrouse's case was similar. He had the flu against Georgia and ;it takes a lot of work to get a big boy like that into shape again.; He was hurt, too, and it wasn't until the end of the season, the 1 last, two games, that we really were able to get the kind of playing out of him we would have Hiked to have had all along. But when he was in_ shape he was the best. Petruzzo was the same way. In spring practice it looked like we were going to get « lot of football out of that boy, but he was hurt in fall practice and; that was that. But he’ll be back next year and should be one of our best men.I guess I'm glad it's over. Maybe we didn't do as well as some ;of the sports writers said we'd ido, but I'm not disappointed.”'
