A woman was the’ cause of it all. She was a guest in Har- \ bin Springs for a few . days while .Tef-j | fries was training there. One evening: j after the champion had completed his-,daily exercises this woman proposed j that she tell his fortune by cards. The j | big fichter shuffled the pack. then cut ! them into three piles with his left hand. The woman took the cards and laid them out on the table in mysterious or- j der. She told him he would get. his wish by winning the fight... Then came the card that, according.to the fortune-telling system, portended Juck. and immediate! v after ft.' came an eight spot. | “You will win in the eighth round.” i j the amateur fortune teller declared. Af-1 ter, that the.cards were put away and it became the pooular belief about the training camp that the champion would win in tlie‘eighth round. ..A few days before the fight this.woman met a reporter, whom she had met in the Fast/and knew well, and ; •told him; she had been in Harbin Springs, and that while there she had learned that Jeffries was to win in the eighth round. She told him pleiulv the source of her information, so, that the story that this report came from any compact between the fighters seems to-be pure invention.
