ALL EYES ON B % • LITTLE PUG S• 9tGREAT BATTLE PKOWCISED BY ^’GOVEBN AND CORBETT.Terry Will Carry Much Money But Many Prominent Sporting Men '• Expect young* Corbett 'to Win.Now that the great fistic battle between Jim Jeffries and Bob Fitzsimmons has finally been decided the sporting men ‘turn their attention to the coming featherweight championship battle between ''Young Corbett, the present champion, and Terry McGovern. which is to be decided before the | Nutmeg A. C., of: New London. Conn., j on the afternoon of Aug. 29. Although ! the contest will not be fought for four weeks yet, the fight is being freely discussed in sporting circles. One surprising thing in connection with the fight is the fact that nearly all the prominent sporting men .in the East, especially the race-track contingent, seem to think that Corbett will trim the little South Brooklyn'whirlwind; fighter just as handily as he did last Thanksgiving day,- . The battle which McGovern put up against Dave Sullivan at Louisville, in which it took ! | him 15 rounds to defeat the latter, is i the main reason why. the sports figure• out that Terry is not as great a fighter ! as he was a few years ago.| Young Corbett is gaining admirers 1 day after day. On the strength of the quick way in which he gave Terry his i quietus they cannot see how McGovern ; | can beat the aggressive little “Western i j fighter. Corbett, who is not by any! : means a boaster in regard to the speed j* with which he can defeat a man., as ; other fighters are. simplv says that he j is confident he will beat Terry, but does i not expect to finish him as quickly as i he did in their previous fight.i Both -hoys have already started in to ! train for the contest. McGovern is get-\ ting in condition for the encounter at Stratford. Conn.. which is just about five miles from Bridgeoort. while Corbett is doine: his work at Saratoga. Harry Tuthi]], who is one of the best trainers of pugilists in this country.| has been engaged by Corbett to train him.Tim Hurst, the well known baseball 1 umpire and referee of boxing bouts, will i referee the championship battle between “Young Corbett” and Terry Mc-i Govern. He was selected at a conference held between the two men who! were named to select a referee for the j battle. Hurst has not officiated in a« contest since he refereed the bout be-1 tween Hughey McGovern, brother oil Terry, and Charley McCloskey, of Pittsburg. which was fought at Alleshany City several months ago. Hurst is ai eool and level-headed official and also!| is well un on the same. He was form - I ! erly the referee of the Southern A. C. I 1 of Louisville. i1 Judging from the interest which is i being mauif^ted in the contest, it ca.nl he safely said that there will be more j money wagered on the result of the j 1 fight than on any battle between feath- j : erweights that has ever been fought in i this country. McGovern on the strength of his great battles prior to his defeat by Corbett, will in all probability!| be made the favorite at orlds of 10 to ! 9.. McGovern’s followers will be so anx-i ions to bet their money on Terrv’si i changes that they will be willing: to j ( bet the above odds in order to get thpir j : money covered. Honest John Kelly, -| Ceorge Con^idine. Eddie Burke. Bob j I Hilliard. .Tohnriy Considine and Harry; Bulger are a few of the important sport- 1 ins: men who will bet heavily on Cor- j \ bett.
