YOUNG EVANS TAKESGOLF HONOR pF WESTHe Defeats Albert Seckel by 1 Up in 36-Hole Match.iHomewood Country Club, Flossmoor, . July 31.—Charles Evans, Jr.. of j Exmoor, the youngest player who entered the tournament, won the western gulf championship by defeating Albert Seckel( of Riverside, by one up in a thrilling 36-hole match at the Homewood Country Club today. Out of a field pf twelve starters; Ir remained for Evans, who is barely IS year* of age. to capture the greatest amateur golf honor of the west.Evans piled up u comfortable lead in the morning round of 18 holes, and was four up at luncheon. In the afternoon deckel came back strong and reduced Evans’ lead to 1 up. with th* assistance of a penalization by Referee Tom Bendelow. Had It not been for this penalization, Evans would base t won the match on the seventeenth green by 2 up and I to play.This* was the first penalty ever .inflicted by an official 1q the Western Golf Association event. The Incident occurred on the eleventh green after Evans had holed out In four. Seek el's ball Jay within halt a foot of the hole, and as Evans reached down to take his ball out of the cup, he knocked Seekers ball away, thus conceding him the put and a half in four. Referee Bendelow immediately awarded the hole to Seek-ie! el, because of Evans* disregard of the :,J Western Golf Association s yules' pro-*“ i 111 biting the conceding of the puts.
