(Happy) Chandler is ready to pack up and go” in a few days, now that he has assurance that his enemy, Secre-tary-Treasurer Walter Mulbry, is quiting, too.Chandler refused to comment on yesterday's Associated Press story 2- 1 that baseball's Executive Councilhas accepted Mulbry's resignationat the commissioner's demand. But it was learned that Chandler will stick to his promise to resign. |Y_, The former Kentucky Governor I/ll and Senator, who twice lost his fight for a contract renewal, steadfastly has refused to quit unless Mulbry. his one-time college pal. also was relieved of his post. Close friends for 30 years, the two fell out recently.Chandler handed his Mulbry ultimatum to John Galbreath, president of the Pittsburgh club, who talked with Chandler for five hours Saturday in Cincinnati. Galbreath had been sent by the Executive Council with orders to get Chandler to resign immediately.A member of the council, who requested anonymity, admitted Chandler has agreed to resign if Mulbry goes too.We had to yield to Chandler's wishes,” he said, because we felt this thing cannot drag out any longer. It is an impossible situation when you’ve got a man you don’t want running your business for you.”Chandler last month accused Mulbry of “disloyalty” and asked the club owners:' “Give me the satisfaction of firing Mulbry before I leave office.” At the time, the Executive Council asked Mulbry to “carry on until the commissioner resigns, at the pleasure of the council.”Mulbry, at the time, said “loyalty is a two-way street. It isn’t only the underling who should be loyal to his superior. It works both ways.”In Cincinnati yesterday Mulbry said: My going or staying does not appear to be world shaking.I am agreeable to doing whatever seems to serve the best interests of baseball. This is in contrast to Chandler's attitude.”Victors in Dupont GolfBud Kilbreth and Larry Byers are in the semifinals of the District left-handers’ golf tournament at Fort Dupont after eliminating BUI Reese, 1-up, at the 18th hole, and Clyde Griffin, 7 and 6. respectively.s Prize Girl Shortstop Beauty LeagueBy Brian Bell, Jr.Dottie Schroeder, 23-year-old Fort Wayne infielder, may be the best shortstop in girls baseball— Manager Max Carey says she is —and there's a good chance she's the prettiest, too.Washingtonians will get a chance to see Dottie in action when her club meets the Racine Belles in an exhibition series at Griffith Stadium next Thursday and Friday nights.Rain washed out the first spring workouts of the two clubs at Alexandria Municipal Stadium yesterday but the photographers took enough pictures of pretty Dottie, who plays* ball with her blonde hair in pigtails, and the other girls in their short skirts and regulation baseball stockings.Carey, a major league star with the Pirates several decades ago. says Dottie is tops as a shortstop. “Why Charlie Grimm (ex-Cubs manager) said he’d give $50,000 for her if she were a man,” Carey says.Throws as Hard as Men.“She can make aU the plays and throws as hard as most men. Carey continued. “Her main trouble has been hifting but last year, she finished sixth in runs-batted-in. She’s a real shortstop.Dottie has been playing professional baseball since she was 15 and has been with three different clubs. She started with South Bend, Ind.. then went to Kenosha and was traded to Fort Wayne two seasons ago. In 1949, she went on tour with an all-girls’ team to Central and South America, but in all her travels this is the first time she’s been in Washington. When Dottie was asked if the girls made many double plays she looked startled. “Of course,” she said, “and I've figured in triple plays a couple of times.”Says Girls Play Smarter Game.Carey quickly dispelled any doubts that girls baseball wasn't on a par with the men’s game. I would say the gals play smarter baseball than most minor league teams and better ball than many of them.”“We’ve shortened the bases because the girls can't run as fast as the men,” he continued, “and use a slightly larger ball. But it's still baseball—and a good brand, too.”Carey knows plenty about girls' baseball. He was president of the All-American Girls' Baseball League—the feminine big league— for five years and last year reentered the league to manage Fort Wayne, bringing them up from seventh place in 1949 to second last year, two games out of first.Phil Wrigley, president of the Cubs, started the league in 1943when he was afraid big league ball might have to quit because of the war and he wanted to have an attraction for Wrigley Field.Six-Team Circuit Now.Since then it has blossomed out in the Middle West into a six-team circuit. Carey organized a Cuban league a few years ago and two teams are still playing regularly there. In fact. Max has two Cubans with his Fort Wayne club, Mirtha Marrero and Isabelle Olvirez.Carey isn’t the only ex-big leaguer in girls' baseball. Johnny Rawlings and Dave Bancroft manage clubs in the loop and Marty McManus and Bill Wamby used to be in the ieague. In addition to his star shortstop, Max is proud of Betty Foss— “she’s the Babe Ruth of the league but can run twice as fast as the Babe”—who led the hitters last season with a .346 average: Evelyn Wawryshyn, who stole 65 bases in 1950. and Pitcher Maxine Kline, with a 47-14 won-loss record over two years.Penn Relays(Continued From Page C-l.)mann running the Benjamin Franklin Mile against Roger Bannister, heralded as Britain’s best miler since Jack Lovelock.
