Last Wednesday Sandon faced an alarming Smallpox report. Carpenter Robert McTaggart from McGuigan Basin arrived ill and wandered about before quarantine. He seeks care at Sandon Hotel, now closed, amid rumors the Chinese cook at the Silver Bell may have exposed him.
Mining locals report the Maydee claim two miles above town has 35 feet of tunnel driven on the ledge with considerable concentrating ore. The lodge is traced on the surface, and Leslie Jill of the Vancouver group visits the mine as work grows elsewhere in Slocan City.
The Drumlomond Group on the neck of the creek above the Comstock Mines shows a ledge over eight feet wide traced for 1000 feet. A paystreak on the footwall yields three to five inches of clean ore running 160 ounces of silver and 40 percent lead per ton. John Carrahar reports a 5 foot cross cut that penetrates 30 feet, with the ledge at the cut nine feet wide and two feet of concentrating ore plus five inches of clean ore.
In Red Mountain’s Rockland claim the cross-cut tunnel reached a ledge at 75 feet with specimens revealing iron and copper sulphides and likely gold. The Rockland, part of the Villa Group, shows a surface gold copper ledge. new mine buildings ready to house a large mining workforce.
F L Byron reports the A E claim on Red Mountain has a tunnel driven to over 656 feet with the lower edge of the ledge expected to be encountered soon. Cross cutting after the vein will require about 100 feet. the project is copper gold oriented and its outcome influences nearby properties. A pack train delivered supplies Thursday as work is to be pushed as vigorously as possible.
The L H mine reports 80 feet of tunnel advancing on the L H vein with similar quartz to the upper tunnel. New quarters rise on the property and winter work is planned. The L A claim is described as the largest gal bearing quartz body in Slocan country. The upper cross cut shows the vein 110 feet wide with streaks from inches to feet carrying gold values from 20 to 150 dollars.
The Slocan resumes regular lake service Monday after repaint and upgrades. A table shows departures from Nelson, Slocan City, Silverton, New Denver, Roach, Sandon and more with morning and afternoon runs and estimated arrival times.
Hugh Calhoun, long time helper for A. P. Mc Donald, was hurt while guiding a pack-train to the A E mine on Red Mountain. While removing fallen timber on Thursday he slipped and cut his foot badly, reaching White’s ranch at the mountain’s base and now faces a slow recovery.
