The Willa property started up on Wednesday, adding another working mine to the Red Mountain area. The villa, a gold copper bearing proposition, is owned by a joint stock company controlled by Judge Spinks of Vernon and associates, pleasing local business men.
Development work at the Vancouver mine continues with crose-cut progress in No 1 and No 8 tunnels and an upraise in No 3 tunnel. A bunkhouse fire caused no delay. the new bunkhouse will be erected. The mine shipped 400 tons of high grade ore from the Slocan and expects a strong next season under eight hour shifts and a $3.50 union wage.
In a granite area about four miles up the Ten Mile wagon road from Ten Mile Landing, the May Flower and Black Eagle claims show strong surface widening. A two foot ledge on Black Eagle is exposed with ore and a tunnel 283 feet long. May Flower has surface stripping and vein tracing. Prospects include P Linguist D Mchergan D McDonald and D Mc Quaig who plan extensive work this season.
The Noonday mine above town remains busy as a union operation employing seven men with plans to expand. Daily additions of concentrating ore and second-class ore fill dumps while two workers sort and sack shipping ore. The mine keeps its value stable and will ship another carload soon. E Rammelmayer, Emilyditch mine manager, returned from Rossland with his wife and family. Several youths swam recently, showing little fear.
Rosun mine paid off and work restarts on Hum bolt claim. $15,000 planned for Slocan bridges and trails. Surveyors arrive. McFarlane and Popham prospecting Similakameen. Byron praises Hamilton Group. Canadian Mining Institute visit planned for September in Slocan and Silverton. Miner licenses renewed amid law change. Anaconda Mining notes 1889 to present output and labor costs.
On the Willard claim near Alpha Mountain a tunnel 40 feet long revealed a tunnel floor streak of clean ore. Ground-sluicing exposed a ledge leading to a rich body of clean ore similar to the Lone Star Group, with work to continue and a new tunnel planned.
The Silverton Football Club was formally organized at a Victoria Hotel meeting last Wednesday. Officers elected: William Hunter president Jus Bowes first vice president J A McKinnon second vice president J Kirkpatrick secretary treasurer R Matheson captain R Thorburn R Malloy J Brandon 8 Watson B McNaught on the committee.
The General Gossip of The Week notes strike activity not yet severe. About half the miners at Wakefield and Emily Edith mines laid off, while Vancouver Group and Noonday mine maintain full force. Villa on Red Mountain to start up, more prospectors abroad, two mines closed due to eight hour law, Essex Group development proceeding with seven men employed.
The Slovan area sees Summer linger, bear hunts depart town, and Wm Hunter roams Lardo-Duncan country. Builds on Brantloy Block proceed while Wakefield Co plans a Lake Ave office. New Denver sets April 1 as next celebration date. Cranbrook visit ends with Mrs. McIntosh staying. A rumor of a blue paper encyclical is denied. Barrister F L Christie will attend at Selkirk Hotel Fridays for services. Silverton residents greet visitors warmly.
At a public meeting in Slocan City on May 27 1899 miners prospector and citizens pledged to uphold the eight hour law and maintain current mine wage scales. They sent copies to unions in Sandon Silverton and Nelson and to the press and expressed sympathy with union efforts.
A reader asks for a sure cure for freckles and Mary answers with an odd method involving a putty knife, salt water soaking, then smoking in a sawdust and slippery elm bark smoke house for about a week. The note ends with garbled terms.
