Record Attendance at Town Meeting in Russell Chamber

Sixty nine residents including seventeen women attended Russell's council session in a record turnout. Mayor Burgess outlined tax arrears rising to 19,900 and noted healthy reserves. Police reports showed RCMP policing since April 1 reducing speeding. fire brigade had 12 calls, with 12 members and calls outside town limits. The meeting discussed street work, bylaw on fences, and cemetery and parks upkeep plus town centennial projects and a seven year financing plan.

Higher Incomes Face Medicare Tax Break For 1969

A married man with two children earning 11348 dollars will pay a smaller combined income tax and Medicare premium next year. The six percent income tax surcharge will be partially offset by Medicare premium reductions. The family premium drops from 9.80 to 1.10 dollars per month starting November 1, 1969, saving the householder about 104.40 dollars annually.

Local Government Heads Meet for Co operation Push

Manitoba urban and municipal bodies and school trustees group met in Portage la Prairie on September 20 to discuss joint programs. They agreed to improve information flow on regulations and grants to reduce local decision making friction and plan future joint talks on local services and shared facilities.

After months of waiting, tenders are called for a new 38 bed hospital in Russell. An advertisement notes that general contracts close October 90th and sub-trade contracts close October 28th for local firms interested in bidding.

Reeve Thompson Ends 35 Years of Service

Reeve Bert Thompson will not seek re election at year end after 35 years of municipal service in Russell. He served 31 years as Ward 8 councillor and four years as reeve, prompting Ward 6 to open for a new councillor. Other expiring terms include Jim Rice Ward 1 and Kurt Zimmer Ward 3. The Russell town civic slate also includes retirements and re election bids from local officials across Shellmouth Silver Creek and nearby boards. The mayor J A Burress seeks an eighth five year term.

Russell Educator Appointed to Provincial Curriculum Committee

Wayne Hollier, history and English teacher at Major Pratt Collegiate in Russell, named to the Provincial Curriculum Committee of the Manitoba Teachers' Society. He also joins the Western Regional Inservice Committee covering Pelly Trail, Rolling River, Birdtail River, Souris Valley, Fort la Bosse, and Antler River. Wayne Johnston of Russell Elementary School also serves on the same committee.

Canada Bonds promise eight percent yield to maturity

Finance Minister BE Benson announces the 25th series of Canada Savings Bonds that double money in nine years. The new issue, dated November 1 1978, goes on sale October 6 and runs through November 14 with an average annual yield of 8 percent to maturity. Buyers may leave coupons unchased and earn compound interest on interest for the full term.

Funeral Wednesday for Pioneer Resident Lily Alberta Payne

Funeral services were held for Lily Alberta Bertie Payne at Knox United Church in Russell. Payne aged 84 died September 21 after a lengthy illness at Assiniboine Hospital Brandon.

Air Cadets Parade Opens Week with New Cadet

The air cadets parade in Russell Community Hall started at 1900 with 50 of 88 cadets on parade. Calvin Deeley from Foxwarren joined as a new cadet while CO Dennis Trinder reviewed the detachment and WO1 Burl read the DRCs. First year cadets received citizenship from Rev. Connor, second years trained in careth nics by Alvin Biletsky at the elementary school, with further NCO and special courses in first aid, photography, and aviation education conducted by local officers and instructors.
