Manitoba Plans New Controls for Western Equine Encephalitis
Health Minister Bud Sherman announced immediate initiatives to seek a permanent protection against Western equine encephalitis in Manitoba. Eight new human cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 20 with one death in Winnipeg. Approximately 116 horse cases and 22 deaths have been recorded this year, as officials evaluate vaccination options and mosquito control. The Advisory Committee led by Dr. John Wilt will review past measures and propose courses of action, with funding sought to implement them by year end and a 1982 focus on active search for a definitive program. Public urging to continue precautions and spraying in affected areas persists as Culex tarsalis activity declines.
