A contentious open letter admonishes residents to avoid harming community vitality through petty criticisms and exclusionary behavior. It urges self reflection on civic action, asking what individuals are doing to improve the town amid taxes and industry issues, while recounting historical notes on fur traders and the Red River region including John Macdonell.
A fragment from a journal in a book about Five Fur Traders of the North West recounts John Macdonell joining the North West Company as a clerk in 1793. He pledged five years of wintering for board and 100 pounds pay. He left Lachine May 25 and by September the brigade moved from the Red River forks westward, meeting Indigenous lodges and hunting meat along the way.
A special Canada goose refuge is established in the Oak Lake area to protect stocked birds placed by Ducks Unlimited. Boundaries run along highways 1, 2, 21 and 83 and the area remains closed until geese become resident breeders in the marsh complex. Only Canada geese receive protection under this regulation.
Breeders wishing to join the R O P Beef Program at Douglas must apply before the end of September. Applicants should have at least three to five bull calves sired by one bull born Feb to compile production herd records for culling uneconomical producers. Contact Wilfred A.
