Waterfowl Crop Damage Program Keeps Manitoba Efforts Ongoing

The program, now in year four of a five year plan, will spend about 200000 dollars this year to protect Manitoba grain crops from waterfowl. Cost shared by Manitoba Natural Resources and Environment Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service, the initiative uses bait stations lure crops and propane cannons to lure or scare birds from fields at sites including Big Grass Marsh Delta Marsh Grants Lake Oak Hammock Marsh Diamond Lake and near The Pas. Late seeding and moist growing season slow harvests increasing crop vulnerability to waterfowl damage as numbers swell in major marshes this fall.
