Portage by election tests Filmon strength in Tory stronghold
In Portage la Prairie Manitoba a provincial by election set for September 30 will probe Premier Gary Filmon's popularity amid a farming region, with advance polls from September 13 to 27. Tory candidate David Faurschou, a farmer from Faurschou Farms, seeks the seat long held by the Tories while Reform hopeful Warren Goodwin runs as an independent after the party disavowed provincial campaigning. Liberal and NDP candidates also compete as voters compare last June federal results to expected provincial outcomes. The legislature currently stands PCs 30, NDP 23, Liberal two, Independent one, with one vacancy.
