Lake of the Prairies advisory group meetings on fishing impact
The Lake of the Prairies Advisory committee with regional government and First Nations representatives met with Manitoba Conservation and Saskatchewan Environment on October 17 to discuss fish harvesting. Officials reported a 15 to 40 percent decline in campers and anglers using lakeshore facilities, attributing much of the drop to winter aboriginal net fishing coverage. Despite lower use, walleye fishing remained strong. authorities expect good future harvests and plan a conservation initiative balancing access for First Nations and other users. The process will include long term management planning considering reservoir variability, mercury in larger fish, and cross provincial boundaries, with next meeting to be announced.
