RCMP in Manitoba laid 1,443 charges during a 10 day Selective Traffic Enforcement Program targeting seat belts in September. Seat belt charges totaled 796, other highway charges 556, plus other provincial and federal statute charges. 18 tickets were issued for motorists with children without car seats. The program began September 9, 2004 in partnership with the Manitoba Car Seat Coalition. The figures show many motorists remain unbuckled, and belt use is critical to prevent injury or death.
