Sulfur soil testing advised for Manitoba fields this fall
Manitoba fields may need sulfur in addition to standard fertilizers to achieve top production next year. Ken McGill of the Manitoba Soil Testing Laboratory says many soils are sulfur deficient or marginal, especially oilseeds and legumes. He notes a gypsum layer beneath topsoil may supply sulfur for years, and stresses testing to guide sulfur application and rates.

Manitoba teachers back test driven math program follow up
The Manitoba Teachers' Society president Al Valentine says a January math test of nearly 3000 grade ten students should guide follow up programs. Results show solid fundamentals and basic algebra but weaknesses in geometry and the metric system. The test was run by an interorganizational committee with schools, universities, and the Education Department. Valentine expects education officials to use findings to shape elementary math objectives and supports expanding this testing approach to other subjects. He lauds the interorganizational method for its focus on outcomes and less disruption to students and schools.
