Royal visit to Manitoba planned for October 2002
The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Manitoba in October 2002 as part of a Canadian tour marking the Queen’s 50th anniversary on the throne. Manitoba’s premier noted the selection as a highlight, with the Queen last visiting in 1984 and the Duke of Edinburgh visiting in 1997. The Pelican Lake Centre in Strathcona is sold for $1 to revitalize local economy after years of vacancy. The centre opened in 1909 as a TB facility and became a residence for the mentally challenged in 1976. Neepawa and Springhill plan a $100,000 lagoon upgrade to address foul smell, cost-shared by Neepawa taxpayers and Springhill, with the Manitoba Water Security Board covering half in phases.
