Winners include Douglas Cormack Irene Antonichuk Mazie Brown Sarah Shaw and others with extensive school participation and a push for Sunday School attendance.
James Armstrong Sr. born 1854 in Beverly Ontario died Thursday at his Rossburn area home five and a half miles southeast of town after a stroke two weeks prior. Survived by Mary McCormack widow, three daughters Belle Ruby Agnes and three sons James Percy Walter all of Rossburn. Funeral service held Saturday with Rev. Nixon and Rev. Hamilton, interment at Rossburn Cemetery. Also noted is the death of infant daughter of Mr. Wm Campbell buried Saturday after service by Rev. Nixon.
The Robert Raikes Diploma was presented Sunday to 35 Russell Union Sunday School members for perfect attendance during the year. Rev D D Millar B D led the presentation and a list of recipients follows including Marion Brown Ethel Hembroff May Hembroff May McMurray and others.

Trinity parish announces Divine Service at 11 a.m. on the 18th Sunday after Trinity. Confirmation class is set for Saturday evening at 8 o'clock with 11 confirmands urged to attend as one of the final classes.

Shellmouth welcomes Mrs Campbell as a new resident while Mr Campbell recently took over grain buying at B A Elevator. Mrs L Elliott left for Winnipeg, a masquerade is planned for Shellmouth hall Friday Oct 16, with bills to follow. Bridge work continues and some locals employed. Women's Institute meets Oct 15 at 3 pm hosted by Mrs Ridgway. Roll Call recalls Miss Thompson’s lecture.
Rally day services were held Sunday at Binscarth United Church with many children present. The Wendile choir performed choruses under Rev. J Hunter. Margaret Hume sang a solo. Recitations by Jim Clegg Billy Innes William Morrison Barbara Sheppard Annette Hunter. A dialogue titled The Light of the World by Hazel Strachan Gertrude Clemen Hope Braendle Ina Hunter accompanied by organ. Dr Brownlee Fussell gave the address on the Bible's role in Sunday school and loyalty. Morley Clegg supervised as chairman.
Perfect attendance for September includes Rhoda Wise and Ernest Wise. Merit order lists read across grades with several absentees noted such as Andrew Stewart Ferdinand Nerbas and Harry Pageen. Names across grades include Mansell Henderson Pagan Stewart Nerbas Sykes Wise and others.
Local notes report Oct 29 election day proclaimed a hat holiday. Obituary details mourn the death of Mr C Tennant born in Motherwell Scotland 70 years ago and long coal miner. Survived by wife and five sons and two daughters with funeral in Russell.
The 30th annual convention of the North Western Manitoba Teachers Association is under way in Russell this week with Dr. R. Fletcher Deputy Minister of Education set to speak at the convention sessions and the Thursday public meeting.
A meeting of the Directors of the Russell Agricultural Society is set for Saturday the 17th at 8 p.m. in the society hall.
The annual Russell Co operative Poultry Marketing Association meeting will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the local hall. Members are invited to attend and participate in the session.
The Northwestern Manitoba Teachers Association begins its 30th annual convention in Winnipeg with a two day program featuring addresses by Dr. Fletcher deputy minister of Agriculture and Mr A C Campbell principal Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute Inspectors Morrison and other visiting teachers A public meeting is set for Thursday evening with addresses by visiting speakers and a musical program at 7 p m The association officers for the year are President Major A M Pratt Vice President Mr J H Irwin Secretary Treasurer Mr W J Bond and committee members Miss Manwaring Miss Setter Miss McRostie A Hill and OG T Gamey.
Mr C Brown is congratulated on winning first prize in the CPR garden competition. The Brandon division drew many entries and Brown’s 9 ounce tomato from his prize garden was shown on Saturday as a notable example of his winning produce.
L V Smith of Smellie Bros Ltd nets $100 first prize in a Dominion wide Sherwin Williams display contest. The exhibit in Smellie windows impressed locals and tourists, adding to a strong record of eight firsts, three seconds, four thirds, two fourths, and two specials.
At Inglis on Sunday October 4 a son was born to Mr and Mrs F B Grant.
A. C. McCullock of the Dominion poultry branch organizes about 75 killing demonstrations across Manitoba in November. Each new shipment point will host a killing demonstration with second demos at some prior sites. The Dominion poultry branch will supply graders for Manitoba Co operative shipments.
Leslie Hancock and assistants monitor Union stock yards for bacon type sows for a demonstration car to begin travels on Oct 19. The effort is a joint project of the Dominion Livestock branch, Manitoba department of agriculture, and the Agricultural College to secure a strong supply of high quality sows amid good demand.
